OCR Is Going to the Olympics — This Changes Everything

Obstacle Course Racing is officially headed to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as part of the Modern Pentathlon. OCR replaces equestrian, which had controversy at the Tokyo Games. It's not the full-blown mud run we know and love, but it's a massive moment for the sport's legitimacy on the world stage.

Before Race Day

How to Prepare

First time in the mud? Don't panic. Follow these essential tips to ensure you cross the finish line with a smile.

Trail running shoes for mud runs
Gear Tip

Footwear Matters

Don't wear your newest sneakers. Wear trail running shoes with deep lugs that you don't mind getting permanently stained. The right shoe keeps you from slipping on wet climbs and protects your feet crawling over rocks and roots.

Look for aggressive outsole grip, a snug midfoot lockdown, and drainage ports if available. Many racers swear by Salomon, Inov-8, or Brooks Cascadia for OCR events.

Hydration and fuel products for mud runs
Nutrition Tip

Hydrate & Fuel

These races are grueling. Drink plenty of water the days before, and carry energy gels or chews for anything over a 5K. Electrolytes are a must — cramping mid-course can end your race.

Hydration vests let you carry water hands-free and are ideal for longer distances like the Spartan Beast or Tough Mudder full. Mustard packets are a racer's secret weapon for muscle cramps on the go.

Compression gear for mud runs
Gear Tip

Protect Your Skin

Loose cotton is your enemy — it soaks up water, gets heavy, and chafes like crazy. Compression gear is the gold standard for mud runs, keeping everything tight, reducing drag, and protecting your skin when you're crawling over rocks and roots.

Long compression socks are a must — they shield your shins and knees from scrapes on low crawls. Many veterans also wear compression arm sleeves to protect against rope burns and rough wooden obstacles.

Train Grip & Pull
Training Tip

Train Grip & Pull

Monkey bars, rope climbs, and walls require serious upper body and grip strength. Add pull-ups and dead hangs to your routine.

Your grip is the first thing to fail on race day. Start training dead hangs and farmer carries months before your event. Towel pull-ups are brutally effective for building the kind of forearm endurance you need when the monkey bars are slick with mud and 20 people are watching.

Bring a Buddy
Race Strategy

Bring a Buddy

Many obstacles like tall inverted walls are almost impossible alone. A team ensures you get over, under, and through together.

The best mud runs are team events. Many obstacles — 8-foot walls, inverted walls, carries — are nearly impossible to complete solo. A buddy boosts you up, pulls you over, and keeps you laughing when you're chest-deep in a freezing mud pit at mile 8. Plus, the photos are priceless.

Embrace the Suck
Mindset Tip

Embrace the Suck

You will get cold, wet, and filthy. Accept it early. The sooner you dive into the mud, the sooner the real fun begins.

Every first-timer hesitates at the first mud pit. Don't. The moment you commit and dive in, everything changes. The cold stops feeling cold, the mud stops feeling gross, and you start feeling unstoppable. The people who enjoy mud runs the most are the ones who stopped caring about staying clean about 30 seconds in.
